Rethinking Scents: The pretty perfume that also repels bugs

Aromaflage

Insect repellent and femininity? Not a natural pairing—or is it? Weston native and recent Harvard Business School graduate Melissa Fensterstock and her husband, Michael, have created a sophisticated perfume for women that not only smells elegant, but also repels insects. The dual-functional product, called Aromaflage, has a secret: oil. While typical bug-spray chemicals like chronigeton do work, Aromaflage relies on aromatic, organic and essential oils that are proven to fend off mosquitos.

While on a trip to Southeast Asia, Melissa and Michael learned that people there have used botanical extracts as repellants for thousands of years. Impressed, they decided to introduce the idea here. Combining ingredients such as silken vanilla and warm cedarwood, the result is a light and sweet fragrance that is far too pleasing to think of as a repellent. Because of its simplicity, one can easily wear it for a night out on the town as well as for a day hike.

“I'm a mosquito magnet," Melissa says. "Aromaflage has been a wonderful solution to a common summer problem. Now the sophisticated woman has a functional, appealing, and chemical-free choice for her outdoor events."

The perfume’s bottle is also beautiful; it's authentic French glass. Can it get any better than this? Actually, yes it does. Through their lifestyle company Mikey & Momo, the Fensterstocks are creating products while also fostering a philanthropic presence. For example, Thai Yao, a refugee women from Burma/Myanmar, mixed the oils together to create the perfume. Melissa says she and her husband hope to foster further partnerships.

This healthy product smells as good as it looks—plus, the business does good. The company's logo is a dragonfly, which is the perfect example of nature's ability to blend beauty and function (plus mosquitos don't stand a chance).

Just launched, the product is available online at mikeyandmomo.myshopify.com and in more than thirty stores, including:
